Unfortunately, Barante’s life was cut short. Not long after making this drawing, he entered a military school established by Napoleon Bonaparte, the emperor of France. A few years later, he was helping to lead a cavalry charge across the river Piave in northeastern Italy. The French infantry following behind him and his riders saw Austrian forces advancing from the opposite bank and opened fire. Barante took a bullet and fell dead on the spot.","provenance":"Château de Barante, Dorat (Auvergne); by descent through the artist’s family; their sale, Vassy & Jalenques, Clermont-Ferrand, France, November 5, 2016, lot 92; (Carta Fine Art, Ltd., London)","creditline":"Gift of funds from Barbara Longfellow in celebration of her 100th birthday","accession_number":"2017.119","artist":"Charles-Alexandre-Pierre Brugière de Barante","life_date":"French, 1788–1809","department":"European Art","rights_type":"Public Domain","image_width":7832,"image_height":10798,"recent":0,"see_also":[],"sort_number":"2017   119","image":"valid","public_access":1,"curator_approved":1,"highlights":0,"Cache_Location":"127000\\200\\70\\127277","Primary_RenditionNumber":"mia_8010391.jpg","Rights_Image_Display":"Full","mtime":"2026-02-04T06:00:50.797Z"}
