In one such series, he depicted the grainstacks near his house in Giverny. These large, conical structures of wheat, 15 to 20 feet high, protected the grain from rain and rodents. Typical of farming practice in France, the stacks came to symbolize the country's rural prosperity. Monet studied the grainstacks during different seasons as the sunlight changed in intensity. This picture shows the autumn dawn, at a moment when the sun burns off the rising mist. The grainstack is seen against the morning light, which forms a halo around it. Up close, one sees a flickering patchwork of broken brushstrokes, each one a notation of light. At a distance, these colors coalesce into a brilliant, shimmering image. What happens to light when summer turns to autumn, the moon rises, or a soft snow falls? Monet found the answers, painting the same familiar scene near his home in Giverny in all seasons, at all hours, in all kinds of weather. A grainstack sits broadly in a field, the edges of its silhouette glowing as the sun climbs amid a cool mist to illuminate the landscape. Orange, yellow, green, and violet dance across the field as the earth meets the sky in a hazy blur. For Monet, this light was just as much the subject of his work as the grainstack itself.

This painting demonstrates the artist’s supreme mastery of color: the play of light on the pheasants creates a vibrant life that belies the subject of dead game. Typically made of a bronze trunk and branches set into a ceramic base, they are called ""money trees"" because the lower part of the lattice-like branches are decorated with coin-shaped designs that imitate actual coins of the Han period. The coinage represents the wealth and abundance necessary to nourish the spirit in the afterlife, and the tree symbolized renewable, on-going monetary sustenance and unending prosperity. The top of the tree is surmounted by an elegant phoenix (feng huang) or bird of good omen, but perhaps the most interesting aspects are the tops of the branches, which are cast with lively scenes of ancient ritual. In the top center of the branches is Xi Wang mu, Queen Mother of the West, seated in a sort of canopied shrine and being entertained by various performers, flying horses, and other mythological animals. Xi Wang mu emerged during Han (206 BCE - 220 CE) as an important deity of rulership and self-cultivation. She was eventually incorporated into the Taoist pantheon and became a popular subject for sculpture, mirrors, and decorated textiles.","base with iridescent light green glaze and 2 animals, one standing on the back of the other; long post topped with openwork bird finial; 4 long branches at top: 3 depict figures dancing and holding objects and a figure under a canopy on top of branch and figures and radiating coins below branch; one depicts same scene except an animal replaces the figure under canopy; 20 rectangular branches, 19 with figures, horses, deer and figure under canopy with coins sprouting from branches; one with same scene except animal and figure(?) replace figure under canopy; 40 small branches with 3 radiating coins; pendant of monkey with a coin","",,"Gift of Ruth and Bruce Dayton","2002.47a-rrr","","Artist",,,"","Asian Art","Public Domain","valid",5863,10904,0,"1",0,,,"[""""]",,,,,"monet",0.9346984,"[{""title"":""Money Tree"",""_id"":""46241"",""objectId"":""46241"",""link"":""http://audio-tours.s3.amazonaws.com/p183.mp3"",""number"":""183"",""type"":""audio""}]",,,,, "278","Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple","Oil on canvas"," Paintings","46 x 59 in. To Catholics, the image symbolized the purification of the Church through internal reform and the expulsion of Protestant heretics. El Greco depicts a chaotic swirl of figures writhing in pain around Christ, who solemnly and calmly wields a scourge to rid the temple of greed and sin. A native of Crete, the artist became known as “El Greco” (the Greek) after moving to Italy in 1567, but his full signature in Greek letters appears here on the step below Christ. Set in a grand architectural interior, the scene reflects El Greco’s experiments with Italian linear perspective and break from the Byzantine style he employed in the Greek icons painted in his youth. In the lower-right corner, El Greco portrayed four artists: Titian, Michelangelo, Giulio Clovio (a miniaturist and manuscript illuminator), and Raphael. Clovio had secured lodgings for El Greco in Rome at the Palazzo Farnese, a grand Renaissance palace belonging to the illustrious Farnese family. In a gesture of friendship, El Greco included Clovio in the painting alongside the three masters of the Italian Renaissance he wished to emulate. El Greco likely painted this work right after moving to Rome from Venice in late 1570. He eventually settled in Spain in 1577.","Religion: NT. Purification of the temple. This jumble of references, ranging from the institutional to the absurd, collides with bits of language to yield a cacophony of color and form. What at first glance appear to be childish doodles reveal themselves to be a subconscious critique of the rules and systems that govern the individual’s indoctrination into mainstream society. Mori’s work often begins as small pen on paper drawings that are then reconstituted as elaborately layered watercolor on panel paintings. Picture of Money (Sanjusangendo) features a complex tapestry of guilloche patterns taken from Japanese paper currency as its background. On top of this colorful web the artist has painted a sea of smiley faces that represent the religious icons housed in the Sanjūsangendō—an important 13th century Buddhist temple in Kyoto containing one thousand life-size statues of the Thousand Armed Kannon. As in other works, Mori’s work playfully visualizes a clash of opposing forces—sacred and profane; order and chaos; alienation and belonging— to express her doubt and frustration with orthodoxy in general.","tan ground; multicolored color fields; white line drawn smiley faces overall; details of various design elements from currency--scrolls and other decorative elements; various numbers (""1000"", ""5000""); English and Japanese text; paper mounted on board with four ""handles"" cut into back","","From ","The Robert C. This is true charity springing from personal sympathy. One woman even offers Job her gold earring (Job xlii: II). The heavy cross over Job's head is now broken. Prosperity is shown by the fig tree bearing fruit and the standing wheat. The view is taken looking downstream to the east. The north and south abutments and the center pier still survive, but in 1835 the arches were destroyed when a larger bridge was built a stone’s throw further downstream. Beyond the north (left) end of the bridge, we see the arched tower of a chantry chapel built in 1296. Besides praying for the chapel’s patron, the priest collected the bridge tolls. This drawing is traditionally attributed to Thomas Girtin, but it may be a copy after his work. A closely related watercolor is in the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle. Artist Mika Rottenberg uses footage from actual discount dollar stores in Calexico, CA; Mexicali, Mexico; and Yiwu, China to recreate the imaginary “life” of a product, from its production in the factory to the moment it is sold. The segments are regularly interrupted by depictions of surreal tunnels, which represent the structures that Chinese residents of Mexicali supposedly dug under their homes and shops to travel surreptitiously to Calexico. Mika Rottenberg creates these elaborate visual narratives to explore the seduction and magic, but also desperation, of our hypercapitalist, globally connected reality, exposing and probing labor, globalization, the production of value, and how our relationships to the world, and to one another, are increasingly monetized.","one black ""G Drive"" moble USB labeled with a piece of masking tape that has the numers [5904] written on it, 7/16 x 5 x 3 1/4""; a short black cord that goes with the G Drive, 24"" long; a thick purple disc in a clear case (LTO-7 tape), 3/4 x 4 x 4"" PLASTIC PRODUCTS REQUIRED FOR INSTALLATION: 1 palm tree 6 plastic balls (3 green, 2 pink, 1 white) 1 multicolor ball string lights 1 green LED string lights 1 blue long stem flower 1 pink flower 1 garland","",,"Purchased jointly by the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Speed Art Museum; with funds from a partial gift by James and Jane Cohan and the Marguerite S.
